Amazing night with amazing friends celebrating the next Senator from Wisconsin, @theothermandela. I dare you to find a more principled and inspirational leader for our times than Mandela Barnes.
End of an era for me tomorrow as it’s my last day as President of @prochoiceamerica and the first day of the rest of my life as they say. It has been beyond the privilege of a lifetime to do this work with our incredible team of staff, members, and allies and I am forever changed by my time here.
As part of my process of unspooling and learning and readying for what’s next, I am committed to being more present for those around me: on my block, in the park, in my local community and in my own home and family. Eight years of urgency, most of which takes place on small screens, requires a studied practice in being present.
So, I am taking a social media fast for the next month or so. I have deactivated my Twitter account (for those who follow me over there) and this will be my last post here for a little while. I am planning to be back and look forward to seeing you all then. In the meantime, I am so grateful for you and all you do and feel free to get in touch the old fashioned way whenever the fancy strikes you!!!
An incredible honor to have my very last public event be with two incredible and fierce leaders @tishaura and @corafaith at the Violet Society Brunch for @naralprochoicemo. As I wrap up my tenure, people ask me often what stands out for me and while there are so many memories, getting to throw weight and support behind candidates and elected officials like these two women who are game changers at every level ranks at the top of the list. And working with leaders like Mallory Schwartz in red states pushing the envelope and making sure that racial equity, electing Black women and truth telling is at the heart of our push for reproductive freedom. #prochoice #reproductiverights #reproductivejustice #reproductivehealth #reproductivefreedom #abortionrights #blackwomenlead
No one can deliver insight and inspiration quite like @corybooker. If you, like so many of us, are in need of some after that SCOTUS news yesterday, head over to @prochoiceamerica IGTV and listen to the good Senator’s words about why now is the time to make sure that hope defeats despair and we commit to the marathon that brings us closer to justice and freedom in this country. Deep gratitude to this great leader for all he does every day and for being my guest on my final #reprorundown as the President of NARAL. Always in his corner and always fighting with all of you until we achieve repro freedom for every body!
SCOTUS takes a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade. There really should be so much more accountability for politicians that call women “hysterical” when we are quite accurately pointing out that fundamental freedoms are in peril. Also, how about we not put legal abortion in peril since doing so creates terrible health outcomes and is the very definition of controlling patriarchy.
#broodx has arrived in our yard. There was a Washington Post article recently that proclaimed “this is not an invasion, this is a miracle!” And, as an ecologist who taught entomology in grad school, I could not agree more. Imagine that you spend seventeen years preparing for a couple weeks partying, singing and mating with billions of your closest friends.
The emergence is an adaptive mechanism to overwhelm predators and guarantee the continuity of the species. Cicadas are also not locusts. They do not destroy crops. They, in fact, are pure protein and can be cooked and enjoyed. There’s a beautiful and tragic story of their emergence assuring the survival of the Onondaga Nation in New York when Gen. George Washington led the Clinton-Sullivan campaign to destroy the Nation’s crops as part of their eradication of Native American communities. (See link in bio for more information.)
So let’s celebrate the beauty and contributions of these critters and offer appreciation for the complexity of the natural world!
Just feeling really grateful for this guy right now. We’re about to get our second vaccines and spring is here and it appears opening is on the horizon if not upon us. I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude and privilege to have been in lockdown with such a supportive, loving, fun, funny partner and father. Counting blessings and this guy is #1 on the list.
Accountability is crucial and today we had some. But do not mistake accountability for justice. Justice would be George Floyd getting to watch his daughter Gianna grow up. Justice would be families not living in pain and fear. Justice would be resourcing our schools and our hospitals and our community centers more than we resource our military and police forces. We have so much work to do to even get justice in our sights. Today, though, a murderer is going to prison, held accountable for his sins. Today, that has to be enough.
One shot in. Thank you science and thank you to all of the professionals and volunteers who provide a caring and efficient environment for these vaccines. My vaccine site alone is administering 1000 shots a day and I imagine that there are now countless of these around the country. I appreciate the ambitious goals that President Biden set for vaccinations and the commitment to follow through of his team. I know how many more people we have to reach here in the US and around the world and we need to keep pushing, but today, I feel gratitude.
Breaking: @tishaura Tishaura O Jones has been elected Mayor of St. Louis tonight making her the first Black woman hold that position in the city. Mayor-elect Jones is an incredible leader who gets sh*t done and a progressive visionary for whom justice is a North Star. I can’t wait to watch her fly in this new position and massive kudos to @naralprochoicemo for their tireless advocacy to get this amazing champion of reproductive freedom elected!! 🍾🥂👊
Some friends. Some wine. Some guitars. And some Scorpions 🦂 🍷 🎸 @lauradawnartnotwar
